Most Common Area Code 726 Scams

Fake Amazon Order Confirmation Scam

Scammers call San Antonio residents claiming to be from Amazon to "confirm" a fraudulent order for an "iPhone 12 Promax" that you never made. They provide a different 726 number to call back and ask you to call a specific 726 number to discuss a refund or cancelation. The Caller ID may show a completely different number than the one they ask you to call back. They use any personal or financial information you provide to steal your identity or money. Amazon does not call customers to confirm orders or process refunds. All official communication happens within your Amazon account.

"Got a call with CallerID showing (could be false) (424) 434-0634 telling me to call (716) 888-5443 and talk to an Amazon support advisor about someone using my Amazon account to order an iPhone 12 Promax. It's a scam."

Medical and Retirement Services Robocall

An automated voice offers "retirement services" or "supportive equipment" and claims you can get "help with pain meds," even if you aren't of retirement age. The Caller ID often falsely displays "pharmacy service" or "Medical Supply" from an unknown number. The "person" on the line is a recording that keeps talking over you and doesn't respond logically, with a strange, distorted voice or unusual cadence. They use any information you provide to sign you up for services you don't need or steal your medical insurance details. Legitimate medical providers and Medicare will not call you to offer unsolicited equipment or medication.

"I have gotten several calls from this number and other one's similar to it, saying that I am now eligible for retirement services and supportive equipment. I am not even close to the age that would qualify for anything like this. When I try to talk to the 'person' the voice just keeps talking. It is a very elaborate recording that has automated responses."

Government Agency Impersonation

A caller pretends to be from the Social Security Administration or IRS and asks you to confirm or provide personal information over the phone during an unexpected call you did not initiate. They use any sensitive personal information you give them for identity theft. The Social Security Administration and IRS almost never call you to ask for personal details. Their primary method of official communication is through U.S. Mail.

"Got a call from 726-238-8584 claiming to be a Social Security Administration representative asking for personal information."

Aggressive Cable & Satellite TV Scam

Callers with a foreign accent claim to be from "Direct TV" or another cable provider and become hostile or uncooperative when you decline their offer. They refuse a direct request to be removed from their call list and hang up on you abruptly. They use high-pressure tactics to trick you into switching services or giving them access to your account information. Legitimate customer service agents will not argue with you, refuse to remove you from a call list, or hang up on you for declining a service.

"I answered the phone and it was a foreign sounding man that said he was calling from Direct TV I told him to take me off their phone list cause I didn't want Direct TV and he said he would think about it and I told him not to talk to me that way and he hung up on me."

Gift Card Text Scam

Scammers send unsolicited text messages from 726 numbers asking you for "Google Play gift cards." They use the gift card codes you provide to steal money that cannot be recovered. Gift cards are for gifts, not payments. No legitimate business or agency will ever demand payment in the form of Google Play cards, Apple cards, or any other type of gift card.

"Text scam asking for google play gift cards."

"Hang-Up" and Silent Calls

San Antonio residents receive repeated calls from 726 numbers, especially from the 726-666 and 726-444 prefixes, that are completely silent when you answer or hang up immediately when you say hello. These calls come throughout the day and night from similar numbers. They use your response to confirm your phone number is active and sell it to other telemarketers and scammers. These calls are not wrong numbers. They are from autodialers that dial thousands of numbers to build lists of active phone lines.

"THIS NUMBER AND SO MANY DIFFERENT ONES THAT BEGIN WITH 726-666 CALL 3-4 TIMES A DAY AND JUST HANG UP. .I BLOCK ONE NUMBER AND THEY CALL FROM ANOTHER LAST NUMBER EXTENSION. HOW DO I MAKE IT BLOCK AND STOP CALLING?"
