Callers claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House tell you that you've won a major prize like $1.8 million and a car from a sweepstakes you don't remember entering. They instruct you to go to a specific store like Dollar General to buy a gift card or prepaid card to pay taxes or processing fees upfront before you can receive your prize. They use the gift card numbers to steal your money. Real lotteries never ask for money upfront. Publishers Clearing House never calls winners to demand payment.
