Most Common Area Code 878 Scams

Aggressive Fake Debt Collectors

Scammers calling from "Lakeview Mediation Group" claim you have a complaint or open case filed against you. They use aggressive and belligerent tactics, provide a bogus file number, and may have your personal information like your date of birth and social security number. One caller identified himself as "Shaw Davis" and became defensive when asked for details about the lawyer he supposedly represented. Callers become rude, defensive, or start cursing when you ask for details, threaten you with a lawsuit over a debt you don't recognize, have personal information but cannot verify the original creditor, and call from VoIP numbers instead of legitimate business lines. They use your personal information to intimidate you into paying fake debts. Legitimate debt collectors must provide written validation notices within five days of first contact. Real collectors do not start with threats and cursing.

"Got a call about me being sued... and the amount is 2210.88. So when I got to asking questions about who he is representing he said Lake Medation Group and a lawyer and when I asked for the name of the lawyer he got all defenses and rude... The guy name so he say is Shaw Davis. Please be aware that they have personal information name date of birth and ss number."

Social Security Phishing Scams

You receive unsolicited text messages or robocalls about your Social Security or disability application. The message might be vague, simply asking to talk, or it could be a voicemail directly referencing a disability claim. When you call back, they immediately begin asking for your personal SSI information. These are robocalls, not live agents from the Social Security Administration. They use your Social Security details to steal your identity and benefits. The Social Security Administration will never text you or use robocalls to ask for personal information. They communicate through official U.S. mail.

"got a text asking to talk . called back and the person started to ask about my SSI . Nope! I do not answer those questions!"

Persistent Car Warranty Robocalls

These extremely common, repetitive robocalls try to sell you an extended car warranty. Scammers call from many different numbers, making it difficult to block them all. The automated calls begin with an urgent warning that your warranty is expiring and continue calling from different numbers even after you block them. They use high-pressure tactics to sell overpriced and often useless service contracts. These calls are rarely from your car's manufacturer or legitimate dealer. Real warranty companies do not use illegal robocalls.

"Keep getting calls from this number in reference to getting car warranty and keep blocking and they keep calling back. Very annoying."

Medicare & Health Insurance Scams

Scammers use robocalls targeting residents with fake offers related to Medicare or health insurance. They claim to be from Medicare itself or a company like "Executive Health," ask for your Medicare number or personal information, and hang up abruptly when questioned or if you don't fit their target demographic. They use your Medicare information to bill for fraudulent services or steal your identity. If you need information on Medicare, call 1-800-MEDICARE directly. Official Medicare representatives will not call you uninvited to sell you products.

"said they were from medicare & hung up when asked what they wanted from a 20 year old"

Fake Delivery Notification Texts

This scam involves text messages claiming a delivery service was unable to deliver a package, often for a high-value item you never ordered like iPods. The message includes a suspicious "tracking link" you are prompted to click to resolve the issue, creates a sense of urgency to click the link to avoid losing the "package." The link leads to a phishing website that steals your personal information like credit card numbers or account logins, or installs malware on your device. Legitimate delivery companies do not operate this way.

"Got a text from this number stating that they could not deliver my ipods (never ordered any) asking me to click on a tracking link."
