Most Common Area Code 574 Scams

Apple iCloud Support Scam

Scammers spoofing "Appel Inc." with a deliberate misspelling on caller ID call relentlessly, claiming your Apple iCloud account has been compromised. These robocalls come 6 times in 20 minutes, sometimes more than 10 times in a few hours, prompting you to press 1 to speak with an agent. They use your Apple ID and password to access your accounts and steal personal information. Apple will not call you unexpectedly about security issues. They send alerts via email or device notifications.

"robocall said my Apple icloud was compromised and so I selected 1 when prompted and spoke with a woman about my icloud account. I asked what ID was she calling for and she named my mother who is 80 yrs old and doesn't own an Apple product. Once I told her that was funny because she obviously was trying to scam me, she then hung up on me."

Aggressive callers impersonate law firms or student loan companies like Navient, threatening to track you down at your home or place of business over fake debts. A caller named "Diane Mutz" claims to be with Navient regarding old student loans from 2013 that you don't recognize, threatening criminal charges will be filed over civil debt. They use any personal information you confirm to create fake payment demands or sell your data to other scammers. Real debt collectors cannot threaten you with arrest. Process servers do not call ahead, they simply show up.

"I`M in big trouble, 'going to track me down at my home and or place of business'............SCAM"

Social Security Administration (SSA) Impersonation

Scammers call with recorded messages claiming your Social Security Number has been cancelled by a court or that a court order is being filed against your SSN. Others claim you are eligible for new Social Security Disability benefits without providing any specific agency name or introduction. They use any SSN or personal information you provide to open accounts or file fake benefit claims in your name. The SSA does not suspend or cancel SSNs. The agency communicates via mail and will not call to threaten legal action.

"Also received message stating a court order was being filed against me related to my social security number. No introduction, name, or company referenced."

Fake Police Charity Donations

A man calls claiming to be from the Indiana State Police, soliciting donations starting at $95 and aggressively negotiating lower amounts when you decline. He refuses to mail information about the charity for verification and becomes pushy for immediate phone donations. They use your credit card information to steal money or sell your financial details to other criminals. Only the Fraternal Order of Police is permitted to solicit funds on behalf of the Indiana State Police. Legitimate charities send information and never pressure for immediate donations.

"Middle-aged man with american accent claimed to be an Indiana police officer, soliciting for a charity...He started at $95 and did not skip a beat in his spiel when I said his ph # came up as a scammer. He kept pushing lower and lower, especially when I told him to send me a package and I'd do a background check..."

Unsolicited Home Buyer Texts

Residents in the 574 area receive unsolicited texts from individuals, often named "Daniel," who know their name and address. The scripted message reads "apologies for the unexpected text, but my name is Daniel" and asks if you are the owner and interested in selling your home. They use your response to confirm your number is active and sell your contact information to other marketers and scammers. Responding to these texts leads to more spam calls and messages.

"Hi [Name], apologies for the unexpected text, but my name is Daniel, and I'm interested in purchasing [address]. Are you the owner?"

Fake Package Delivery Notification

Someone named "Shawn" or "Sean" calls claiming "they" are trying to deliver a package to you, providing no details about the package or courier company. The caller instructs you to call a different toll-free number like 877-969-1945, even if you aren't expecting a delivery, and cannot provide a tracking number or sender information. They use the callback to charge premium rates or gather personal information for identity theft. Major delivery services leave door notices or update official tracking numbers online. They do not make vague calls directing you to unrelated toll-free numbers.

"Received a call from Shawn/Sean, telling me 'they' are trying to deliver a package. I was instructed to call 877-969-1945. Don't know who the company is that he represents."
