Most Common Area Code 305 Scams

Callers using names like "Melissa," "Chris," or "Richard Carmichael" claim to be private carriers with the county calling to warn you have been placed on their schedule to be served court documents at your home or job. They identify themselves as a "private carrier with the county," threaten to show up at your home or place of employment, tell you to have two forms of ID ready, and pressure you to call a separate number to place a "stop order" on the service to resolve a "pending claim." They use your fear of public embarrassment to pressure you into calling their number and paying money over the phone to make the fake legal problem disappear. Real process servers do not call ahead to warn you. They show up.

"My name is Melissa and I'm a private carrier with the county I'm calling to notify you have been placed on my schedule to be served court documents. I will be coming to either your job or place of residence this week and will need your signature and two forms of identification... you need to contact your filing party immediately... you have been notified see you soon…"

Social Security Number Suspension Scam

An automated recording falsely claims to be from the Social Security Administration and warns that your Social Security Number has been suspended due to "suspicious activity" and that the "department has decided to file a lawsuit against you." The message pressures you to call back immediately to prevent legal action. They want you to call their number where they will ask for personal information and demand payment to resolve the fake suspension. Your SSN cannot be suspended. The Social Security Administration communicates through official mail, not threatening robocalls.

"Official final notice from Social Security Administration the reason of this call is to inform you our department has decided to suspend your Social Security number and file a lawsuit against you as we have received an suspicious activity on your social to get more information please call on our department number 305-459-3108."

Craigslist & Online Marketplace Overpayment Scam

Scammers respond to your Craigslist ads using names like "Mary Palma," "Zachery Carter," or "Marcie Scott," claiming they are out of town for a "daughter's wedding" and cannot meet in person. They offer to send a cashier's check for thousands of dollars more than your asking price and ask you to forward the extra funds to their "mover" or "shipper," pressuring you to deposit the check and send the extra money immediately. They use the fake cashier's check to trick you into sending your own real money to them before the fraudulent check bounces. The cashier's check is fake. Your bank will withdraw the full amount from your account when it bounces, including any money you sent to the "mover."

"I was selling ski boots on Craigslist for $200. I just received a check for $2300.89. I was to take out my $200 plus $50 for holding the item. Then the mover was to get the rest of the funds."

FPL Utility Impersonation Scam

Callers spoof Florida Power & Light's number to make it appear legitimate on caller ID and claim your power will be disconnected within 30 minutes due to non-payment or that your electric meter is "obsolete" and running at "high voltage." Using names like "Carlos Martinez," they demand immediate cash payment to avoid service interruption. They use your fear of losing electricity to pressure you into paying them over the phone instead of your real electric bill. FPL provides multiple written notices before disconnection. Real FPL employees never call demanding immediate payment.

"Got a call from some guy telling me its was FPL and that my meter was running at high voltage and needed to be replaced. Claimed that I had not responded to several notifications. Hung up on him. Sounds like a scam."

Medicare Back Brace & Medical Supply Scam

Scammers with heavy Indian accents call from call centers claiming to be from places like "Orthopedic Medical Center," using fake American names like "David Barker" or "Jeff Miller." They ask if you have back or knee pain and offer "free" medical supplies like back braces, asking for your Medicare number to "verify" eligibility, with background chatter from other callers audible. They use your Medicare number to bill for items you never receive or don't need, committing fraud against Medicare. Medicare and legitimate medical supply companies do not cold-call you. Your doctor must prescribe medical equipment.

"'David Barker' (very heavy Indian accent) called asking me a number of questions claiming to be from Orthopedic Medical Center... I was doing just fine until he wanted my Medicare ID number. I don't know this guy from Adam, and I did NOT initiate the call, and he thinks he's going to get private info from me?!? Ummm...NO!!!"

Government Agency Impersonation Scams (IRS, CBP)

Aggressive callers pretend to be from federal agencies like the IRS or U.S. Customs and Border Protection. IRS scammers using names like "Sam" threaten you with arrest over unpaid taxes. The CBP version claims a package addressed to you containing "contraband of drugs and cash" has been seized and you must press one to speak with an officer to avoid legal action. They use your fear of arrest to pressure you into paying money over the phone to make the fake charges disappear. The IRS initiates contact through U.S. Mail, not phone calls threatening arrest. Federal law enforcement does not call to demand payment over the phone.

"It's always from US Customs and Border Protection. The reason of this call is to inform you about a package has been seized under your name by US Customs and Border Protection with Contraband of drugs and cash. So the moment you receive this call, press one to speak with a CBP officer."

Apple iCloud & Tech Support Scams

An automated message claims to be from Apple Inc. and warns that your Apple iCloud account has been breached, instructing you not to use any Apple devices and to press 1 to speak with a representative. Similar scams involve callers pretending to be from Microsoft, claiming your computer has a virus and they need remote access to fix it. The calls come from local Miami numbers, not official support lines, with callers threatening to cancel your software license if you hang up and calling multiple times in a single hour. They use remote access to install malware or trick you into paying for worthless "technical support" services. Apple and Microsoft do not make unsolicited calls about security breaches. Legitimate tech companies do not monitor your devices and then cold-call you.

"received over 10 calls claiming to be Apple saying 'do not use any apple devices without talking to reps. Press 1 to talk to rep or press 2 to hang up.'"

Annoying Fax Machine & Beeping Calls

Calls that are just a series of beeps like a fax machine trying to connect bombard local businesses and residents from the same numbers repeatedly, sometimes dozens of times a day at all hours including early Sunday mornings and overnight, with some numbers calling back-to-back over 20 times in a short period at unusual hours like 4:43 am. These calls are typically caused by an automated "war dialer" or misconfigured auto-fax system that ties up phone lines and disrupts business operations. While not always a money scam, it is harassment that disrupts your peace of mind.

"Just beeps on my work landline phone VERY ANNOYING I get about 20 calls per day."
