Callers claiming to be process servers leave robocalls saying a complaint has been filed against you with a case number. They threaten to contact your HR department, show up at your home or work, and garnish your wages unless you call back to "rectify this matter." They claim you will "forfeit all right to fix the problem" if they have to "find you" and get rude or hang up when you ask for details about their company. They use your fear of legal trouble to pressure you into giving them money or personal information over the phone. Real process servers do not call first. They show up.

"I just got a call from them saying I owe them money. They are going to garinsh my money and call HR. I was so upset and told them I'm not giving them anything. She said good luck in court. Well I haven't been sued or summons."

Unemployment Claim Phishing Scams

Scammers send text messages claiming there is an "error in your Unemployment Claim" for states like Massachusetts or New York. The text includes a fake link designed to look like an official government website using URL shorteners like bit.ly or non-government domains like .live. The message creates urgency to get you to click without thinking. They use these fake sites to capture your username, password, and Social Security number for identity theft. State unemployment agencies never text you links to resolve errors.

"We noticed an error in your Unemployment Claim. Click https://xclaimnationmss.live/ma Review Your Claim.MASS.GOV" only an idiot would fall for these scams but I know there's plenty of those out here."

Social Security Number Suspension Scam

Callers posing as officers or agents claim your Social Security number has been suspended due to "suspicious activity." They give you a callback number with a different area code than the one they called from and ask for your name or SSN to "verify" your identity. They use your fear to steal your Social Security number and other personal details for identity theft. Social Security numbers cannot be suspended. The Social Security Administration never calls about this.

"I got a call from 570-463-2013 telling me they saw suspicious activity on my SS number and suspended it. I waited to talk to someone. He wanted my name which I didn't give. He claimed to be some officer and was going to give me some fake badge number."

Aggressive Old Debt Collection Tactics

"This is a collection agency. They are trying to collect a debt for me that is older than 7 years. They are representing Buckeye Lending which does business as CheckSmart. I had told them I just got home from the hospital after having a stroke and the man still continued to be nasty with me and raised his voice."

Fake Car Warranty Expiration Calls

Callers using names like "Jessica" leave voicemails about an expiring warranty on your vehicle. They pressure you to make an immediate decision and often have incorrect information about the vehicle you own, such as mentioning a Chevy to a Ford owner. The message asks you to call back a different toll-free number than the one on your caller ID. They use this false urgency to sell you worthless or overpriced extended warranty plans. These telemarketers have no knowledge of your actual warranty status.
