Most Common Area Code 380 Scams

"American Rescue Plan" Tax Debt Scam

Callers from numbers like 380-888-0984 leave voicemails claiming to be from a "Department of Tax Debt and Financial Settlement Services." They use names like "Mary Fletcher," "Alia Smith," or "Delia Smith" with fake state ID number "FF694." They claim a new tax debt compromise program under the American Rescue Plan can eliminate your tax debt, but only if you enroll immediately. They use your callback to collect personal information and money for a program that does not exist. The IRS contacts taxpayers through U.S. Mail, not robocalls.

"Hello my name is Aaliyah Smith State number FS694 this is a notification call from our department of tax debt and financial settlement services the purpose of this call is to inform all US citizens on our state list about the new tax debt compromise program this program is part of the American rescue plan..."

Phantom Outgoing Call Log Scam

Central Ohio residents are finding outgoing calls and texts to 380-222-3333 in their phone logs that they never made. Some users report this number was set as their phone's voicemail number without their permission. Scammers use compromised phone accounts or malicious apps to route unauthorized calls through your phone, potentially running up charges on your bill. Your phone should never make calls or send texts on its own.

"My call history shows that I placed a call to this number. I have never called 380-222-3333"

An automated message threatens you with legal trouble without naming you, the caller, or any specific case. The robocall warns that a "motion is being filed bearing your name" or that if you disregard the message, "the situation will unfolds on you." It demands you press 1 to speak with a fake "case manager." They use your fear to collect personal information and money for fake legal problems. Real court officials deliver documents in person or via certified mail.

"No identification, references a case that needs my urgent attention. Says if I '...disregard this message the situation will unfolds [sic] on you and you may face legal consequences...'"

Google Business Verification Fee Scam

Callers target business owners claiming to be from Google, insisting your business listing is "inactive." They become rude and aggressive when you question them, hanging up when you ask for written information. They demand immediate credit card payments like $99.00 to "verify" your business and keep it listed. They use your payment information to steal money for services Google provides free. Google never charges for Business Profile listings or verification.

"Call from this number asking me to verify my business for Google. In the end, they asked for 99.00 payment right away, telling me they sent to me an email in March. I opened my business in May. When I asked the info to be sent to my email address, He rung out on me."

Fake "Mediation" Debt Collection Threat

Scammers pose as aggressive debt collectors, calling themselves the "MMR Group" or answering as "Mediation." They use rude tones, immediately threaten court action, and contact your friends or family about supposed debts. They refuse to mail documentation proving the debt is real. They use harassment to scare you into paying fake debts or giving up personal information. Real collectors must provide written proof of debt when you request it.

"They called a friend of mine trying to get personal information about me when I called they threaten me with taking me to court"
