Area code 604 had served as British Columbia's sole area code since 1947, with 250 being installed in 1997. Area code 778 was created on November 3, 2001, initially as a concentrated overlay for the Lower Mainland, and later expanded to cover the entire province on July 4, 2007. Area code 236 was added for the province on June 1, 2013. The 672 area code itself was activated on May 4, 2019, and area code 257 was introduced on May 24, 2025.
