Most Common Area Code 920 Scams

Vehicle Warranty Scams

Robocalls and live agents claiming your car's warranty is about to expire use phrases like "final courtesy call before we close out your file" and may use familiar names like "Frank." Reports show these calls target people with 20-year-old cars or people who don't even own a car, with recorded messages urging you to act "TODAY" to continue coverage and mentions of "final notice." They become rude when questioned and call about vehicles you sold years ago or never owned. They use your interest to sell you "warranties" with poor coverage and hidden fees that are nearly impossible to cancel. These companies use deceptive, high-pressure robocalls. Real warranty companies don't operate this way.

"they keep calling me and telling me my warranty on my car expired I told them I haven't had a car in three years if they don't quit harassing me I find out who is calling and have there phone taped"

Social Security & Medicare Scams

Callers pretending to be from the Social Security Administration or Medicare use recorded messages claiming your SSN has "serious issues against it by the dea" or has been stolen. Live callers like "Christy" from "Medicare benefits" or "Ann for the SS disability administration" threaten that your Social Security Number will be suspended or frozen and demand your Medicare number to discuss "new benefits," often with heavy accents and becoming argumentative when questioned. They use your Social Security or Medicare number to commit identity theft and open fraudulent accounts. The Social Security Administration and Medicare communicate through official U.S. mail, not threatening robocalls. They never call to threaten you or demand immediate payment.

"recording saying my ssn had serious issues against it by the dea and to call some number. voice obviously foreign ,i hung up"

Callers like "Lori Grant" leave aggressive voicemails claiming a "complaint notice" or legal action is pending against you, using vague language about a "breach of contract" or "papers registered" with your SSN. They threaten to contact your HR or payroll department, warn that if you don't comply you "won't have a job," use strange terms like being "serviced" instead of "served," and stay vague about what company they represent or the nature of the "complaint." They use fear to pressure you into calling back and providing personal information or making payments on fake debts. Real process servers don't call ahead to warn you. They show up.

"Received a voicemail from 1-920-785-5005. The caller did not say what company or organization they wer calling from... 'After a third failed attempt, I am required to direct further attempts to your HR or payroll department on file.'"

Aggressive Health Insurance Sales

Callers claiming they can find you "affordable health care" call 10 or more times a day, interrupt and badger you when you say you're not interested, demand to know who your current insurance provider is, and refuse to take you off their list even after multiple requests. They sell your information to lead generation companies that distribute it to numerous agents, creating even more unwanted calls. These are not affiliated with the official Health Insurance Marketplace. Legitimate insurance companies don't harass potential customers with dozens of daily calls.

"It doesn't matter how many times you tell them to put you on the 'do not call' list, they will continue to call! I received 10 today! They want to find you affordable health care. It's ridiculous!"

Fake Police & Firefighter Charity Drives

Scammers claiming to be police officers or collecting for a "Sheriff and Policeman's Fund" call from spoofed local 920 numbers to seem legitimate to Wisconsin residents, pressure you to make donations immediately over the phone with a credit card, and use generic charity names that are hard to verify. They pocket most of the money you donate, with only a small percentage going to any actual cause. Local police departments in Wisconsin don't use telemarketers to solicit donations. Most money from these phone scams goes to the for-profit telemarketing company.

"A male called from this number pretending to be a police officer asking for donations for a 'charity' drive."

Business & "Google Listing" Scams

Robocalls targeting local businesses use an urgent recorded message saying "Please do not hang up. Google is trying to verify your business" and falsely claim your Google Business Listing is at risk, incorrect, or in "jeopardy," with phone numbers on caller ID that don't work if you try to call back. They use this false urgency to sell you unnecessary or worthless search engine optimization services. Google does not make automated calls to verify business listings or threaten to remove them. You can manage your Google Business Profile yourself for free.

"They call claiming to be a google certified company looking to help us update and correct our google listing. this is not a legitimate service. the phone number on the called ID doesn't work if you try to call it back"

Fake Purchase Authorization Scams

Recorded messages alert you of suspicious purchases on your account, with reports from the 920 area code mentioning calls about Amazon accounts being used to buy a "Mac Book and Apple airpods," providing a phone number to call back to resolve the issue and mentioning high-value electronics to increase alarm. They use your panic to trick you into revealing account login or financial details when you call back to "cancel" the fake order. Companies like Amazon notify you of orders via email and through your official account portal. They don't use robocalls to alert you to suspicious activity.

"Recorded message saying that my Amazon account was being used to try to purchase a Mac Book and Apple airpods. I hung up before listening to the entire message because it is obviously a scam."
