Most Common Area Code 401 Scams

Scammers call Rhode Islanders claiming a lawsuit or formal complaint has been filed against you. They identify themselves as "Global Processing" and threaten to serve papers at your home or workplace. They mention vague "case numbers" or "pending matters" without specific details, warn you might "forfeit your life" by not responding, and claim you have been "officially notified" via voicemail. They use intimidating language like "legal proceedings" or "contact your county" to create panic. They use your fear to trick you into calling back and paying fake legal fees or providing personal information. Real process servers do not call first. They show up.

"I received a robot call saying I am being served for two matters and they will contact me by coming to my home or work."

Social Security Administration (SSA) Imposters

Scammers call 401 residents pretending to be from the Social Security Administration. They claim your Social Security Number has been used for "fraudulent activities," threaten legal action or arrest if you don't call back, ask you to provide or confirm your Social Security number, or offer unsolicited help with disability benefits. They use your personal information to steal your identity or open accounts in your name. The real SSA contacts people by mail, not phone calls with threats.

"Bogus call claiming to be Social Security Administration. Warned that there was a pending legal action against me and advised that I call 401-214-3715."

Aggressive Car Warranty Robocalls

A recorded message urgently warns that your vehicle's warranty is expired or about to expire. The caller cannot tell you the make, model, or year of your vehicle, uses phrases like "final notice" to create false urgency, and tries to pressure you into pressing "1" to speak to someone. They sell you expensive and often worthless extended service plans from third-party companies, not your car's manufacturer. These calls are almost never from your dealership or car manufacturer.

"Another message from a car warranty company giving me one more chance before I'm removed from their roles. I'm tired of these calls and will be filing another claim against them."

Medical & Pharmacy Scams

Callers use Caller IDs like "Pharmacy Services" or "Medical Services Group" and offer diabetic supplies you didn't ask for. Others impersonate Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island or CVS, ask you to "verify" your date of birth or insurance ID, and call repeatedly from numbers that are only one or two digits different. They use your insurance information to commit fraud by billing for services or supplies you never receive. Your real insurance company or pharmacy already has your information and will not call to verify it.

"Caller claimed to be CVS pharmacy verifying my information so there would be no delay in my getting my prescriptions. I did not give out any information.."

"Ray" the Fake Real Estate Investor

A robocall from a man named "Ray" claims he's a "local real estate investor" interested in buying a property you own. The recording sounds like a real person but the message is vague and doesn't mention your address or name. They use your callback to gather data on property owners or find distressed sellers for scam schemes. Legitimate real estate professionals contact you with specific, direct inquiries about known properties.

"Left a message saying his name is Ray, a local real estate investor interested in buying property I own and call him back at 401-466-4406."

Fake Amazon and Apple Purchase Scams

Automated calls and texts claim there has been a fraudulent charge on your Amazon or Apple account. They mention specific high-dollar items like an iPhone or software from "GeekSquad," provide links to "verify" or "cancel" an order you didn't place, and pressure you to call a phone number that is not an official company number. They steal your credit card or account login information when you call back to "cancel" the fake order. Amazon and Apple never call you about purchases or ask for passwords over the phone.

"I received a text message stating: the iphone I purchased for almost $1000 is on it way, and if I didn't order it call. I didnt order a phone so I expect it is a phishing scam."

Student Loan Forgiveness Scams

Callers leave voicemails offering "good news" about your student loans due to new "federal regulations." They use fake names like "Jessica Banner," provide reference numbers to seem legitimate, mention a "processing department" without naming a specific company, and claim to have "good news" about your loans but don't know any specific loan details. These scams target everyone, regardless of whether you have student loan debt. They collect your personal information and charge illegal upfront fees for services the government provides free. The Department of Education never charges fees for loan forgiveness programs.

"Newport, RI 401-367-4453. Left voice message about student loan debt and that they could help. Good one. I don't have a student loan debt and I'm in the Do Not Call Registry."
