Most Common Area Code 339 Scams

Fake Government Threats (IRS & Social Security)

Scammers from 339 numbers call pretending to be from the IRS or Social Security Administration. A robocall claims the IRS has a lawsuit against you. They threaten you with an arrest warrant over the phone. They state your Social Security Number has been suspended or canceled. They use your fear to pressure you into sending money or giving them your personal information. The IRS and Social Security Administration contact people through mail first. They never call to threaten arrest or claim your SSN is canceled.

"Robot call stating IRS has a lawsuit against me, no intro to the call but this is the number the call came from."

Deceptive Charity & Fundraising Calls

Callers pose as fundraisers for local causes like police departments or veterans' groups. They claim to be collecting donations for the police. They use vague names like "The Fundraising Center." The same phone number gets linked to different supposed charities. They use your donation to line their own pockets, not help any cause. Local police departments do not call asking for donations. Real charities never pressure you for immediate payment.

"Guy pretends he is calling to collect for the police."

The Grandparent in Jail Scam

A caller pretends to be a lawyer representing your grandchild. They create a fake emergency, claiming your grandchild was in a car accident and is in jail. They demand a specific amount like $2,500 to get them released. They use the money you send for their own purposes while your grandchild is perfectly safe. Real legal proceedings are not handled through secret phone calls. Lawyers do not demand immediate cash payments to release people from jail.

"Scam caller saying he was lawyer for my granddaughter and she was in an accident and in jail. Needed $2500 to get her out"

Fake Purchase & Account Alert Texts

Scammers send text messages claiming a high-dollar purchase has been charged to your account for an "Apple watch" or that there is an issue with your Netflix account. The messages contain suspicious links like "netflix-1m.app.link." They urge you to click a link or call a number immediately to cancel the charge. They use these links to steal your login information and take over your real accounts. Legitimate companies never send security alerts with strange, unofficial links.

"Scam text about Apple watch purchase - stating a charge will be made on my card. Number to call - SCAM"

Silent or "Dead Air" Robocalls

People receive calls that are completely silent on the other end. The call disconnects within seconds of you answering. A recording answers your "hello" by putting you on hold. These calls verify that your phone number is active so they can sell your number to other scammers. Answering confirms your number works. This leads to more scam calls.

"The phone rang, I picked it up, and a recording started saying 'no one is available to take your call right now...' Obviously, I hung up. How odd is that. They call me to put me on hold!"

Expired Vehicle Warranty Robocalls

Robocalls talk about your car's warranty being expired. The caller refuses or hangs up when you ask to be put on their do-not-call list. The call is generic and does not mention your vehicle's specific make or model. They use your information to sell you overpriced service plans that provide little real coverage. These calls are almost never from your actual car manufacturer. Real warranty companies do not use illegal robocalls.

"Robo call about car warranty expired. Tried to politely ask them to remove my number from their list 3 times. Always hang up without answering the request."
