Most Common Area Code 413 Scams

The 413 area code is full of government impersonators posing as the IRS or Social Security Administration. They claim you owe back taxes to trick you into paying them with gift cards or wire transfers.

Government Impersonation Scams (IRS & Social Security)

Scammers call claiming to be from the IRS or Social Security Administration. A recorded message threatens you with a search warrant or arrest, claiming fraudulent activity is attached to your Social Security Number. The Caller ID may falsely display "Socks Security" or mention a police officer. They use your fear to get you to call back and provide personal information or payments. The IRS and Social Security Administration contact people through official mail first, not threatening robocalls. Real agencies never threaten immediate arrest over the phone.

"The number calls me over 40 times a day. Recorded call stating fraud is attached to my social security number."

Callers like "Evelyn Davis" falsely claim you owe money for a past loan, sometimes from years ago, and threaten to sue you for thousands of dollars if you don't pay immediately. They refuse to mail official proof of the debt, demand you confirm your Social Security number before explaining why they're calling, threaten to contact your employer's HR or payroll department, and offer a one-time "manager's special" to settle immediately. They use your personal details to set up fake payment arrangements or steal your identity. Legitimate debt collectors must provide written validation within five days. They cannot threaten arrest or contact your employer without a court order.

"Claimed to be a Lending solutions and I borrowed 500.00 2 years ago it was deposited into my account that's been closed for 8 years if I don't pay I will be sued for 2000.00 and if I want to I can settle now for a couple hundred!"

Utility Company Impersonation Scam

Scammers pretend to be from National Grid, Eversource, or Columbia Gas. They don't have your account number and ask you to "have your statement handy," claim to be from a utility company that doesn't service your specific town, call from spoofed local numbers, or ask to enter your home without any prior appointment. They use your account number to switch your energy supplier without your permission or steal your identity. Your actual utility company already has your account information and won't call asking for it. Official employees always have company-issued photo ID badges.

"This woman is claiming to be from National Grid to discuss my bills. Wants me to call her back with my bill to give her my account numbers. Do not fall for this scam."

Medicare & Medical Supply Scams

Callers identifying themselves as "Medicare Advisor" like "Meredith" or "Nancy" claim to be from "U.S. Medical on behalf of Medicare." They say the call is being recorded, immediately ask about your health, call repeatedly about knee or back braces, and operate from noisy call centers with many other callers in the background. They use your Medicare number to bill for fraudulent medical equipment you never received. Medicare representatives almost never call you first and are not permitted to sell you equipment over the phone.

"Have gotten 3 calls from this number even after I blocked it. Pretended to be calling from U.S. Medical on behalf of Medicare. Total SCAM! Do not answer as you can hear many others making calls in background as well."

Fake Police & Veteran Charity Scams

Callers claim to be from the "veteran police assoc" or similar organizations asking for donations. The Caller ID shows "PoliceOfficerPAC" or similar names, they claim to collect money for local police associations, and pressure you to donate immediately over the phone. These are Political Action Committees disguised as charities where little of your money reaches the actual cause. Most local police departments and legitimate veterans' organizations do not solicit donations through third-party phone calls.

"Male caller claiming to be from the veterans police association. It's a scam. Police do not make phone solicitations."

Employment & Business Loan Scams

Scammers target job seekers with texts from "Mrs. Jessica Adams" from real companies like "Acando" or "Vattenfall," asking to conduct job interviews on Google Hangouts or Skype using unofficial email addresses or Google Voice numbers. Others offer robocall claims about pre-approved business loans you never requested. They collect your personal financial information to steal your identity or set up fraudulent accounts. Legitimate companies conduct professional interviews with multiple people, not exclusively through chat apps. Real lenders require formal applications, not cold calls.

"*Beware* This number is linked to a Job Employment Interview Scam Issue. On 2/18/2019, I was contacted by this number (Mrs. Jessica Adams from ("Acando" Company). Very viable company but scammers using it to conduct a fake interview. They asked to conduct the 'Interview' either in Google Hangouts or in Skype."

"Can You Hear Me?" Voice-Fishing Scam

Callers often named "Joe" from a "gift department" immediately ask "Can you hear me okay?" and state they are on a recorded line right at the beginning. If you reply with anything other than "yes," they hang up. They record your "yes" response to use as a voice signature authorizing fraudulent charges for services or products you never agreed to buy. No legitimate unsolicited caller needs a recording of your voice saying "yes."

"Person said Hi this is joe you are on a recorded line can you hear me ok. I hung up. They are trying to record you saying yes to use for who knows what scam. Calls all the time."

Aggressive Local Service Robocalls

A recorded man named "Kevin" offers power washing or carpet cleaning services through "Kevin's Powerwashing" or "All Star Cleaning." These calls come very late in the evening, sometimes after 9:30 PM, and prompt you to press a number to be connected or removed from the list. Pressing any key confirms your number is active and leads to more unwanted calls. Telemarketing calls to residential numbers are illegal before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. Pressing a key to be removed from a scammer's list has the opposite effect.

"Received recorded phone call at 9:37 PM January 26, 2019 by someone named Kevin about cleaning business. It's illegal to call after 9 PM !"
