Most Common Area Code 563 Scams

Scammers leave intimidating voicemails claiming they have an "order of process for several pending matters" against you. They often use a fake case number like 28662 and threaten to verify your address and employment to scare you into calling back. They use your fear to get you to pay money for a debt that does not exist. Real process servers do not call ahead to warn you before serving legal papers. They show up.

"Left a voice message 'This message is for *not my name or anyone I know* I received an order in my office today to complete an order of process for several pending matters who are currently being investigated for I will be verifying your current address and place of employment today...'"

The Vehicle Extended Warranty 'Final Notice'

You'll receive a robocall, sometimes from a person identified as "Arthur Jeffrey," warning this is your "final notice" about your vehicle's extended warranty. The call starts with a recorded message, not a live person, and they claim it's your "last chance." The caller doesn't know the specific make or model of your car. They use this fake urgency to get you to speak with a high-pressure salesperson who will sell you an overpriced or useless service contract. Your vehicle's manufacturer will not contact you via robocall for warranty extensions.

"Car Warranty .....warning this is your final (900x later) call.....(insert eye roll here)"

Federal Student Loan Forgiveness Scams

Callers, sometimes using the name "Jennifer Williams," claim to be calling about your federal student loans, even if you don't have any. They ask for your personal information to "help" with your student loans, and the call comes from a regular 563 number, not an official government agency. They use your personal information to steal your identity or charge you fees for loan programs you can apply for yourself for free. Visit the official Federal Student Aid website at StudentAid.gov for legitimate information. The Department of Education will never call you to ask for personal information.

"Caller left voicemail stating her name is Jennifer Williams and she is calling in regards to my federal student loans. I currently don't have any student loans."

Local School & Business Sponsorship Scam

Scammers call pretending to work with a local Iowa school or grocery store, asking for donations or sponsorship money. They claim to be putting business names on football jerseys or tote bags for a donation of $500 or more, may name a specific school or store in your area to sound legitimate, and pressure you for credit card information over the phone. They use your credit card information to steal money from your account. Legitimate school fundraisers rarely involve cold-calling local residents to ask for credit card numbers.

"They were pretending to be working with the local school to make T shirts and asked for my card info. They were very convincing... I called the school they claimed to be working with and they confirmed it was a scam."

Fake Subscription Renewal & Tech Support Scam

You receive an email or robocall claiming a subscription has been automatically renewed for a large amount, such as a $509.00 charge from "GEEK NETWORK SECURITY." They claim your computer contract has expired and a large sum will be charged to your account, then provide a phone number to call to cancel and claim a refund. They use this phone call to steal your financial information or get remote access to your computer. Legitimate companies like Microsoft will never call you to report a problem with your computer.

"I received this email: From: GEEK NETWORK SECURITY... you're Network Security Subscription, Has expired... it has been Renewed. The amount of $509.00 will be deduct From your account."
