Most Common Area Code 860 Scams

Eversource Utility Disconnection Scam

A robocall claims to be from "Eversource Energy" and threatens to disconnect your power in 30-45 minutes for non-payment. They call on Friday afternoons or weekends to create panic and pressure you to pay immediately with untraceable methods like Zelle or credit cards. They use your panic to steal your credit card information or banking details for unauthorized charges. Call Eversource directly at (800) 286-2000 to verify your account status. Real utility companies send written notices by mail weeks before disconnection and never disconnect on weekends.

"We received 3 calls already today from this number saying our Electricity would be disconnected due to non-payment. Caller ID says Eversource. I hung up and called Eversource because I am paid in full, Eversource they have confirmed this is a scam call."

Social Security Administration (SSA) Arrest Scam

An automated voice from the "legal department of the Social Security administration" claims your Social Security Number is suspended due to suspicious activity and threatens federal trial or arrest warrants. They demand you call back immediately and provide your SSN or personal data to "verify" your identity and "clear your name." They use your SSN to open credit accounts, file fraudulent tax returns, or steal government benefits in your name. The SSA never suspends Social Security numbers and never calls with arrest threats.

"This was an automated call from the legal department of the Social security administration telling me that my Social Security number was suspended and that this case is going to a federal trial and that I could be arrested."

Vehicle Warranty Expiration Calls

A caller, sometimes named "Jessica," delivers a "final warning" about your vehicle's factory warranty and knows details about cars you own or previously owned, like a "2014 Jeep." They pressure you aggressively to make an immediate decision and ask for credit card information over the phone for a new warranty plan. They use your credit card to charge you for overpriced, worthless service contracts that provide no real coverage. These are third-party telemarketers using public data, not your car's manufacturer. The urgency is completely fake.

"A live person told me this my final warning on "unpaid payments" on my 2014 Jeep. I do not own a Jeep."

A robocall from a "Processing Center" or "Client Services" leaves threatening messages about a "complaint filed against you" or that you are "forfeiting your right" to handle a matter, provides fake case numbers, and claims they are calling to "verify a current address to proceed against you." They hang up if you mention recording or ask for written proof. They use any personal information you confirm to create fake debts or sell your details to other scammers. Real process servers don't call ahead, they show up. Legitimate debt collectors must provide written proof when requested.

"I'm calling to verify a current address as well as a place of business address to proceed against you at this time. You are forfeiting your right to take care of this matter... You've been officially notified."

Amazon Fake Purchase Scam

A robocall claims a fraudulent purchase has been made on your Amazon account, often for an expensive "Apple iPhone," and instructs you to press 1 or call back to cancel the order. When you call back, they ask for your Amazon login credentials, credit card number, or remote computer access to "cancel the order." They use your login to make real purchases on your account or use your credit card for unauthorized charges. Amazon never calls about orders and only communicates through email or your account notifications.

"Claiming to be Amazon calling to 'check a purchase that was trying to be made for an Apple iPhone on my amazon account'- they then asked for my first and last name and as soon as I said I did not feel comfortable giving him that information- he hung up on me."

Police & Firefighter Charity Scams

Callers ask for donations for a "Police Officers association" or "Fire Charity Fund," stay vague about which specific local department they represent, pressure you for immediate donations of specific amounts like "$50, 100, 1500," refuse to mail information, and become hostile if you decline. They keep most or all of your donation for themselves instead of supporting first responders. Local Connecticut police and fire departments don't use paid telemarketers. These calls come from for-profit companies.

"Claiming to be collecting donations for 'the police who are really hurting right now', but not what departments or programs specifically. They have and are using multiple similar numbers to call. Just ignore and block."

Medicare & Health Insurance Phishing

Callers pose as representatives from Aetna, Medicare, or "medical benefits" providers, offer free DNA tests, ask if you've had saliva or blood tests done, claim they can get you increased coverage, ask you to "confirm" your Medicare or Social Security number, and request recorded "yes or no" responses as electronic signatures. They use your Medicare number to bill fraudulent medical services to your account or steal your identity for medical fraud. Call 1-800-MEDICARE if you have coverage questions. Medicare and insurance companies never call unsolicited to sell products or ask for personal information.

"Don't know the purpose of this call but the caller says he is from 'medical benefits' and asked if I already had a DNA test done and whether it was a saliva or blood test. He sounded of Indian origin."
